Q: Worried

I'm still worried. I've seen a neurologist who said the drug didn't damage my brain and even did an MRI. It came back clean. For some reason I still have trouble trusting doctors You hear horror stories from guys like Joseph Glennmullen which my doctors have said aren't true. Any thoughts?.

Hello,

Your distress is evident and I have been examining how to respond so forgive me if it took a few days to get back to you.  If you are still feeling the emotional bluntness and sexual side effects, I am very sorry to hear that and I hope only that they go away as soon as possible.

I went back to re-read your first question which I had answered.  Now I want to respond to your current question.  If Joseph Glenmullen is someone from the anti-psychiatry contingent, like MindFreedom, you must understand he is pushing an anti-drug agenda.  And people like me who have been greatly helped and do even better on the SZ meds than we did without them are pushing our "take the drugs" agenda.  So you have both sides talking up what works for them.

Anti-depressants are known to curb someone's sex drive and libido, so it is possible that even if you're not on an anti-depressant right now there could be a residual side effect that might go away with time.

One thing I want to throw out to you is about the emotional blunting.  I do not know if it's a permanent side effect or a minor prodromal symptom coming on, I'm not a professional and can't diagnose what's going on or give you advice.  My suggestion is to monitor your moods and your thoughts and if you feel they're not right and they have become increasingly troubling to you, do not hesitate to consult with a psychiatrist.

Lastly, I understand how you or anyone could be unable to trust doctors if your experience with a doctor left a lot to be desired.  I saw a pdoc for five years who bordered on being unethical, and one day I called his answering service, canceled the next appointment, and never went back.  I found a doctor who is a true professional.  Like finding the right drug, finding the right doctor is a process.  I always suggest setting aside some money to pay for a first visit with two or three doctors or therapists, and then deciding which one you liked best and will continue with.

To be honest, again I'm biased because I had mostly positive experiences with psychiatric staff.

I hope you find some relief.  I could understand how you could possibly not trust the neurologist if in your everyday life you still have symptoms or side effects despite the MRI.

Regards,

Christina
