Hi sinistral,   Speaking through my own experiences with voices, I will try to answer your questions. Keep in mind that everyone is different and therefore you may not experience what I have and vice versa.   When I first heard voices years ago, they bombarded me from the time I woke up to the time I fell asleep. 29 years later, I hear them in the morning when its quiet. I wake hearing music and about 2 hours later I will start to hear voices. I keep busy so as not to hear any voice. I keep my mind stimulated and moving forward. I am able to "push" them away.   Music helps keep them at bay. Staying as busy, not only helps the voices, it helps my anxiety and depression.   One last point..you can live a productive life while hearing voices. Taking meds is key to the recovery of voices.   I wish you well.   Dave
