Q: How do I overcome stiffness due my medication?

How do I overcome stiffness due to my medication? Abilify is my medication. People often tell me I move like a robot or a zombie. I do not feel stiff though. In the past I tried cogentin, but I don't like taking more medication than I have to. Now I am attending a yoga class to loosen my joints. What should I do?

Hi Valash:

I'm not an M.D., so I can't answer you question.  You need to talk to your psychiatrist.

I take three different medications for schizophrenia plus cogentin to deal with the side effects of the other three.

With all the other medications I take for other conditions it sometimes becomes a real juggling act to keep me on an even keel.

Best wishes,

Robin

Hello Valash,

Yoga could help, and also it could help for peace of mind.

When I was on the Stelazine, I took Artane [a drug like Cogentin] to counter the side effects of the Stelazine.

My question is, does the Cogentin work to relieve the stiffness?

If so, you may want to continue taking it even though you don't like taking more medication than you have to.

In the meantime, tomorrow before work I will ask my pharmacist if he knows of anything that could relieve the stiffness, maybe a non-drug solution.

Regards,
