Q: My mom was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2000.Does her kids have a high chance of getting it?

Hi JMc,

 

Schizophrenia does have a genetic component.  I wouldn't worry or obsess over this; I would educate yourself about the illness and read about the early warning signs, if only to help your mother as she navigates living with the schizophrenia.  They key to recovering from schizophrenia is to get early treatment with medication and therapy, because quick intervention increases the chance of a favorable outcome.

 

Even with your mother being diagnosed with this illness, that doesn't mean you will get it.

hi,  the genetic linkage is 1/10 chance for i parent with schizophrenia.
