Hello bb,

I understand your concern.  The statistics are out there that correlate to a genetic risk.  The bottom line is, educate yourself about the schizophrenia, know the warning signs, if someone gets sick, get early if not immediate treatment for them, and stay involved in a positive way in their treatment.

There's really no way to predict, even with a genetic link, who will get the schizophrenia and who won't.  Education and awareness are the key factors in being able to reduce the effect of the illness by getting quick treatment when you notice the first signs of the schizophrenia appearing.

Any mother or father should stay committed to working on their problems as a couple, and not yelling or arguing or screaming, especially not in front of the kids.  Having empathy and adjusting expectations is important if the child does get sick.  Not to expect that they won't recover, but to accept that in the beginning, it won't always be smooth sailing and they'll need you not to make harsh demands.

Good luck with everything and I hope whatever is going on in your situation works out for the best.

Regards,

Chri

Yes, genetics does seem to play a role in paranoid schizophrenia. Yes, children of schizophrenics are at a slightly higher risk of developing the disease. No, there does not seem to be a way to prevent people from developing schizophrenia.  Early diagnosis and proper treatment lead to a better prognosis.
