Hi Ann:

I wish you had given us a little more information. For instance, are you the one taking the medication, and what was is prescribed for? Risperdal is an antipsychotic, and is designed to reduce/control psychotic thinking. It is also used in Autistic children to control irritability and some doctors are using it for depression in teens.

Psychotic thinking comes with Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Depression with Psychotic Features.

If the Risperdal is not taken as directed, then the patient can experience "breakthrough" symptoms of psychosis, and certain drugs or medications can cause this as well, or interfere with the absorption of the Risperdal.

You should speak with your doctor about this, because it can be serious.

Best of luck,

Dr. Diana Walcutt

Hello Ann,

A good suggestion was already given.

"Partial compliance," where the patient doesn't take the meds every day as prescribed, or takes them irregularly, is a culprit in a lot of the cases where a person experiences breakthrough symptoms.

Not all drugs alleviate all symptoms at all times, so you could have residual symptoms.

Again, talk to your doctor.

Regards,

Christina

Hi,

I would like to ask the same question, as a member of my family showed some signs of depression and the only positive symptoms he showed was that he was scared of people. It was not a very obvious symptom, he would just be very sceptic to anyone coming near him and i think it was caused by a trauma in his life where he had to undergo a tremor removal surgery in the head and he blamed his family and later felt unsecure and could not trust people.

He was given risperdal consta at age of 18, and since then he developed more positive symptoms that was not present in the past.

Manar,

It is possible for symptoms to develop while someone is taking a drug like Risperdal or another antipsychotic.  The dose or dose time might have to be changed or the drug might have to be changed.  Sometimes you have to go through trial-and-error to find the right medication or combination of meds that best alleviates the symptoms.
