Hello mimi,
Congratulations on your marriage. It is beautiful that you want children. There is always a genetic risk. However, I know two people with sz, a woman and a man, who have children. One person's kid developed bipolar; the other person's kid is about 11 years old and doing fine.
I would ask your psychiatrist about what drug you can take while you're pregnant. This is a big step. Only your psychiatrist can tell you what drug is safe. You may have to be taken off the drugs during your pregnancy, though. This I'm not sure about, so ask your doctor. There is always this risk.
There is always the option of adopting children if you are able to. Not that you'd probably know if the adopted kids have a genetic link to the sz, though you could possibly ask.
The bottom line: if you decide to have kids, you would need to educate yourself about the schizophrenia, be aware when something is out of place, and get immediate or early treatment for your son or daughter.
So many people write in with variations on your question. All I can say is, if you give your child love, refrain from arguing and yelling and screaming with your husband (especially in front of the children) and give them a stress-free home, this could delay an episode or perhaps event stop the kid from getting sick.
You just don't know. Nobody can predict the future. I am a firm believer in adoption, however, I know not many people want to consider that as a first line, they want to have their own children.
Best wishes,
Chri
