Drug abuse, especially heavy marijuana use, can cause psychotic symptoms and symptoms of schizophrenia.  There is also a diagnosis: Substance-Induced Psychotic Disorder.

It would be wise to lay off the drugs in any case.

Hi Sue. To answer your question I would say yes. My SZA was triggered by drugs. I also believe it was genetic, and the physical abuse. My psychiatrist put it this way, The space shuttle that blew up had a problem before it launched. My SZA is the same, I was predestined to develop SZA. The drugs did have a part in it.

Let me also add that the root cause for SZA hasn't been found ..yet.

I did alot of marijauna. I was also into crystal meth, and lots of pills that I can't remember. And no it didn't affect me sexually. The meds I'm on now do though.

My psych doctor told me if you already have shizophrenia, it can make it ten times worse, and it will last for a long time after you last had it. Chances are you were already prone to it, but the drugs made it worse. Some drugs can actually cause this reaction though. I have the onset of schizophrenia, and I hallucinate on Marijuana, and sometimes alcohol as well, so you are better off staying away from illegal drugs if you are schizophrenic.
