Q: Capital punishment for someone who commits murder while they are off their meds?

I am against sentencing someone to death in this circumstance, yet I have a hard time agreeing that forced medication is okay.  If I were on a jury, what would be my vote?  I'll have to think about this some more.  It is a choice not to take meds, yes.  And maybe this has to figure into the equation?   What if the defendant couldn't afford medication?

NO electric chair, NO life sentence in prison.

LIFE in a psych ward, until the person is sufficiently rehabilitated.

This topic was the focus of a Q&A in SZ magazine about four years ago: should a person with SZ, who kills someone, be released into the community after he serves time or should he be kept locked up?  One of the women who responded if memory serves was the mother of the guy Vince Li decapitated on the Greyhound bus.

I'm sorry I don't have any way of reprinting that Q&A here yet it did address this very topic four years ago.

To end here:  after the crime is committed, I see no reason why the defendant can't be forced to take medication.  A history of violence by someone with SZ is an indicator of future violence, especially if that person never takes his medication.

That's how I see it, though I understand how you feel.

Christina
