Q: Will getting money from art jeopardize SSDI payments?

I am embarking on a series of paintings of the American Flag and if I sell any, will I still be able to get SSDI?  Or do they count that as gainful employment?  I don't think this is covered at the SSA.gov site.

Hi Carolyn,

Honestly, if the money you get is "off the books," and doesn't generate a paycheck, W-2 or 1099 for tax purposes, it's a gray area, the government might not catch on.  But any income that generates an actual paycheck will be considered towards the monthly maximum allowed by the SSA.

When I move into my own apartment, I will see if there's a suitable space for an American flag painting  :)
