Q: My son is 18 and hearing voices

My son is hearing voices telling him he is going to hell and that God doesnt love him and that he will die in his sleep.  He believes he is the only one experiencing these particular voices.  Is there anyone out there experiencing the same voices?

He needs to get a consultation with a doctor immediately as in right now this very minute.  If he does have schizophrenia he will need to take medication immediately and get into therapy.

Hearing voices is the classic symptom of schizophrenia although there can sometimes be others causes of hearing voices like a medication side effect.

From what you describe it sounds like he is hearing voices related to schizophrenia although I can't diagnose what's going on.

Like I said he needs to see a doctor right away and that could very likely be a psychiatrist

Schizophrenia usually strikes in one's late teens and early 20s so this is something to take serious and get help for immediately.  The voices will not go away on their own.  Other people have heard similar voices they are quite common for people with schizophrenia.

Medication and therapy really are the only way to go as soon as someone exhibits the symptoms of schizophrenia like hearing voices.

Rest assured he is not possessed by the devil.  Schizophrenia is real medication condition that has good treatment options.

A person diagnosed with schizophrenia can indeed recover.  I've been in remission from this illness for 19 years because I take the medication every day as prescribe.

This is not the time to wait and see what's going to happen.

It's time for you to take action.

I suggest you contact a reputable doctor in your community.  The CastleConnolly directory can help you do this.

Thank you,

He is seeing a doctor and he is on respirdone.  He just feels that he is the only one suffering with this type of illness regarding the voices telling him he is going to hell.

He might want to attend a NAMI peer support group where people with MIs meet once a week for encouragement and feedback and support.  Call (800) 950-NAMI (6264) to find the name and phone number of your local affiliate if you are in the U.S. that would host the peer support meetings.

I actually hear the very same voices. From the age of 8 years old I heard voices telling me that I'm going to hell. So please tell him he is not the only one. I've suffered greatly from these voices, and still to this day they say I'm going to hell, or even worse things than that.
