Q: I have a 22 year old son - his doctor suggested Geodon

My son is totally against taking any meds due to the side effects.  Is Geodon safe to take?  How does it compare to Zypreza or Abilify?

Hi,

I think you have every right to be concerned about the effects of medication. However, in these situations there is usually a balance to be struck as to the benefits versus the risks of medication.

Geodon (ziprasidone) is an approved treatment for schizophrenia. Like all antipsychotics it comes with an impressive list of potential side effects and contra-indications. Simply by typing the name into a search engine will provide you with plenty of information. Having said that, people do react very differently to medication. Most people obtain relief - which is the purpose of the medication - and the most common side effect is sleepiness.

It may be worth considering it. I can't tell you how it compares with the drugs you ask about partly because the effects of these may be different according to the patient taking them. If your son tries, he can always stop or request a change if side effects are too marked. If he doesn't try he will never know whether the therapeutic effects will outweigh the side effects (if any).

Best Wishes
