My wife has Schizophrenia before we were married 4 years ago. i learnt it 3 months after our marriage. she was taking some medicines before marriage which i don't know of. after marriage we started her on quitiepine 100, divalpro and sizodon plus 2.5 mg . slowly over 2 years it has been reduced to 2mg sizodon plus per day. The Doc tried to reduce it further but the symptoms would come back in 2 months , so it was again increased to 2mg per day. She is not aware of her illness, and wants to have children. Can she get pregnent while on medication?

Dear Mike,

With all due respect, a women can get pregnant whenever she has unprotected sex.  The medication used to treat schizophrenia and psychosis is NOT birth control and has no effect on that.  If your question is, do women with schizophrenia choose to have kids and get pregnant and raise families, the question is, yes, they do, and they can be successful at it.  It depends on the woman.  I'm a woman of child-bearing age who has chosen not to have kids because I don't want them to inherit my genetic tendency to have schizophrenia.  Schizophrenia runs in my family, so I don't want to take that risk.

Regards,

Christina
