Q: Needing info on manic bipolar schizphrenia

My 30 year old husband has been diagnosed with Manic Bipolar Schizophrenia, where do I need to look for information regarding the 3 together? I am at a total loss as where to look and what I need to do for him to best support his needs.  Any info will be greatly appreciated.  I will be picking him up tomorrow from the instituion he has been in for 2 weeks and do not know what to expect.

Hi

You may find it easier to think in terms of schizoaffective disorder. This refers to the coexistence of mood disorders (e.g. bipolar) with symptoms of psychosis (schizophrenia). I think you should find things a little easier in your quest for more information.

Hello,

Community members on this web site have schizoaffective and by reading their SharePosts and stories you will undoubtedly be inspired that your husband can recover.  This site is for both SZ and SZA, so your husband may want to contribute here.

You also may want to join NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, at www.nami.org

where you will find support and encouragement as a family member whose loved one has a mental illness.  This agency has local affiliates throughout the United States that host weekly or monthly family support meetings.  Your husband may also want to join a support group for people diagnosed with MIs, and NAMI has those too.

The one thing I want you to take away is that people can and do recover from SZ and SZA.  The main thing is to be supportive of your husband and understand that it might not be easy for him at first so he will need encouragement and support.

You are also free to post SharePosts here.  We are a welcoming community.

Regards,

Christina

Hi. I have symptoms that are found in both bipolar and schizophrenia, so I agree with the doctor that finding out how to deal with it by researching schizoaffective disorder is the best thing, because that is what I have been diagnosed with.
