Q: What injectible antipsychotics are available for paranoid schizophrenics & what are the side effect?

My son is a paranoid schizophrenic who is 35 years old and lives alone.  He has had many hospitalizations for psychotic episodes and can become very violent.  He has been on many oral antipsychotics but he is noncomplient with them and eventually takes himself off them.  Because of this he has regressed many times.  He describes severe side effects of almost all medications.  Abilify was the most effectilve for him but he refused to continue on it.  He is currently on monthly injections of haldol with good effects relating to his psychotic  episodes .  However he sleeps alot,  has little interest in his surroundings, no ambition.  He does not clean his apartment and has very poor physical hygiene.

My question is if there are any other injectable antipsychotics out there?

Hello nfoden,

I understand your frustration at your son's inability to stay in treatment and the possible side effects or lingering symptoms, such as negative symptoms.

This is no way intended as medical advice, just a list of certain drugs which I cannot recommend, I'm merely listing them so that you can do further research and decide on your own.

Risperdal Consta is the injectable form of Risperdal.  I also believe there's an injectable form of Geodon.  Click on the green "Find" menu on the upper left of this page, and click on Drug Information.  Also, you could log on to www.drugs.com to look up the information about the various drugs, which has an A to Z listing.  Geodon will possibly be listed under Ziprasidone, the generic name, and Risperdal is Risperidone.

Regards,

Christina
