Q: Could My nephew have Schizophrenia?

I am trying to find out if my nephew coud have schizophrenia. He is very much out of control. He thinks everyone is out to get him. He yells almost all the time. He has very bad sleep habits. He has already been diagnosed with bypolar and ADHD and ODD. I am really starting to get worried that he is going to hurt himself or others. He is already been in trouble at school several times. He wants to try and throw things or hit people. Please get back to me as soon as you can Thank you

Hello pb71,

Your nephew needs to get a diagnosis that is accurate at this point in time based on the symptoms he's presenting.  Most people with schizophrenia are not violent [upwards of 95 percent of us are NOT violent and only about 5 percent could be violent].

So please don't think he has schizophrenia just because he is violent and angry.  He could want to hurt people for any number of reasons and anybody, regardless of what kind of mental illness they have, and regardless of whether or not they have a mental illness, could be violent.

It sounds like your nephew is a young man who needs at the least some kind of therapy, medication and possibly anger management sessions.

Like David Robbins said the good news is with early [immediate] treatment a person can recover from a mental illness or at least have a life well enough to function in the world without being totally disabled.

The key word in that sentence is {immediate] treatment.  The longer treatment is delayed, the worse the outcome.

So I wish that your nephew finds relief from his symptoms and gets control of his behavior.  Recovery is not quick and it is not easy.  However it is possible to recover and your nephew will need to commit to his recovery 24/7.

Again I hope he finds some relief.

Regards,

Christina

Thank you very much because I feel the same way, because there are days that he is so gentle and loving, you just want to take him and love himm to pieces. I feel that he is just lashing out because of just having a bad childhood whe he was younger

First let me say that I am no doctor or therapist. What you describe needs to be addressed by a professional. He may have sz or maybe not. He needs help and the longer its delayed will make the recovery process longer. If he does have sz it will be with the rest of his life.

Let me add that having sz isn't a death sentence. Many people have successfully made a good life for themselves. Proper treatment will benefit him.

He has been in treatment since he was about eight years old he has been diagnosed with bypolar, adhd, odd. but nothing seems to help him. His biological father had sz. that was the most meanest man i had ever met
