Q: Do people who take Risperdal have mental disorders?

Hi! I have a good friend who manages his father's problematic real estate business at present. After graduating from the university in 2006, he didn't get to do what he really wants to pursue.  He wants to work for a multi-national company, pursue further studies in Economics, and marry his girlfriend. His manipulative father is controlling his life and  I have observed that he has become very stressed, evasive, and is under a lot of pressure now because he never got to pursue his heart's wishes. His behavior has changed a lot.  Perhaps he can't accept the fact that he has taken a different career direction.

For a year now, he has been taking Risperdal to regulate his sleep because he's under pressure at work.  He told me that he sees a psychotherapist once a week for 45 minutes.  I believe what my friend told me but I can strongly feel that there is so much more to what he has told me and I'm really concerned as I have seen his girlfriend's agony because of his behavior change.  Their relationship has suffered a lot since then.  Please let me know if Risperdal is also used for sleep regulation and if he's taking it because he has mental disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar.  My family and I want to help him before it's too late.  Thank you.

Hello Miroslava,

I've heard of Seroquel being used for sleep so it's possible Risperdal is used for that too.  I will ask my psychiatrist when I see him on Friday.  Risperdal is most commonly used for schizophrenia.

If you wanted to help your friend I understand.  Perhaps you could talk with him gently to gauge his desire to be helped.  You could suggest that you'll be ther for him "through thick and thin" as the expression goes, as so many friends abandon those of us with SZ when we are diagnosed, and your friend may feel better if he knows you'll stick around.

It may be that the "sleep regulation" is all he's comfortable talking about right now.  Like I said Seroquel, also an antipsychotic like Risperdal is, is used for sleep regulation so it's possible the Risperdal is too.  I will research this and get back to you.

Regards,

Christina

I had to take risperdal for awhile after being hospitalized for scizophrenia(paranoid).Yes it is for scizophrenia but I do believe they can use it for sleeping too.But scizophrenia is worst when stressed and that can cause anyone emotional problems period.I have lost my job in Dec.2008,lost my dad in Feb. 2009,and after taking care of him I am very touched trust me.I hate the risperdal it caused me to gain 40 pounds in a year!Sometimes we all need alittle help especially talking to others it really does help.
