Substance abuse boosts violence in schizophrenics

(Science Daily) UPDATED 2009-08-13

New research has found a link between violence and schizophrenia, but this link was even more pronounced when schizophrenia was accompanied by drug and alcohol abuse. But the scientists also found that the violence risk associated with schizophrenia and psychosis was no more pronounced than it was for people who abused drugs and alcohol and did not have the thought disorder. The researchers say this finding could mean that concentrating efforts on reducing substance abuse may help reduce violence in society even more than concentrating on treating mental illness.
