Can vitamin D ease schizophrenia?

A woman whose son has schizophrenia asks if vitamin D can help ease her son's symptoms. Dr. John Cannell, a psychiatrist who works with people with the condition, responds that the vitamin does not reduce hallucinations, psychosis, or paranoia in schizophrenics, but it can improve mood, reduce tremors, and even help reduce the amount of antipsychotic meds patients require. The vitamin can also help reduce the risks of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, which are common conditions in people with schizophrenia.
