Birth Control and Politics: The Power of the Pill at the Polls

By Merely Me, Health Guide Monday, February 20, 2012
Okay so we know that abortion is a divisive topic among politicians and voters. There is no surprise about that. But birth control? Really? Is it just me or is the recent political hullabaloo over health care and contraception a bit of a shock? Just when I think people are going to come to their sens...

I am amazed that, with all the really significant issues that this country is facing, primarily the economy, so much attention is being given to these social issues that should not even be issues.  And the irony doesn't escape me that the very people who want less government in our lives want to control the most personal issues individuals and couples can face.

That being said, I do support birth control being made available, free of charge, in some form, whether it be through insurance or public help.  Birth control is cheap - much cheaper than the burden on society of caring for the thousands of children born into the welfare system.

Obama's original stance that all employers had to provide birth control even if they were against it on religious grounds was dead wrong but the compromise was definitely in the right direction.

I have to say...I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I don't get it either.  And the "conversations" about this topic are only getting worse.  I may report on one public commentator calling a woman a "slut" for wanting birth control covered by insurance.  wow.  What to say?

One would think that this compromise would be acceptable to all...again I don't get it.

Politics is a strange beast.  I feel as a society we have regressed.

Thank you for your comment and wisdom.

I understand the compromise, but I believe birth control should be covered.  We have enough children in this world born into homes where there aren't enough resources to take care of them.  The funny thing is, a lot of people who are against abortion don't believe in contraception, either - I mean, really???  Like you said, MM, a lot of men seem to have strong opinions about this and they aren't the ones bearing the children or rearing them, for the most part.  I thought we were beyond that.

Hey Judy

Yeah...this is the interesting element here is that there sure are a lot of men who want to decide these things about women's health care.  It is downright depressing.

Jobs?  What happened to talking about jobs?

It would seem that a few extremists wish to decide our future.  It is a strange world we live in.

Thanks for stopping by to comment Judy.

Was one of the principal foundations of our country not freedom? Granted, some laws restrict our freedoms to do whatever one wants, but shouldn't we try to limit those to an absolute minimum? Shouldn't women be the ones deciding the issue of their own contraception, without the interference of religious leaders and politicians?  Let's get real!
