Are your Periods Irregular? Perimenopause may be to blame

By Merely Me, Health Guide Wednesday, October 28, 2009
I first heard the term "Perimenopause" years ago when I was watching the Oprah show.  She had on a gynecologist who was talking about how your menstrual cycle can begin to become irregular many years before menopause.  I heard this expert say that this process can begin as early as ten year...

I think so... I am 48 and healthy! For about 6 months I have had very light periods 28-30 days apart. Suddenly 38 days later, I get the heaviest period I have had in 20 years. No serious hot flashes, mood swings though. Yet?!

Well...possibly.  I would wait for a few cycles to see what happens.  I am at the point of just throwing up my hands and not knowing what to expect for each cycle.  I would consult with your gynecologist...it does seem likely that this could be the beginning of perimenopause.

Oh my goodness!  What a horrible time you have been having.  Now...have you talked to your gynecologist about all this?  It is a possibility that something else may be causing this like cysts or fibroids or a hormonal problem.  I am not a doctor but I am wondering if birth control pills might help to regulate your periods.

I bet at this point you are wishing that your periods would just end so you can have some relief and predictability.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.

I think the feminine cycle has great significance for self-awareness,

and menopause especially is a time of questioning, of wanting to figure

out where one is at in the life-long learning journey. If we only look

at the physical symptoms and try to suppress or cure them I think

we miss the boat.  Listening in to the body, resting more, being curious about

my inner knowing, my intuition, have all given rise to a sense of gratitude

that menopause exists. Aside from the grace of having no more periods,

I think I am more self-aware, know myself better, more in tune with my need

for rest, and how to stay balanced.

Irregular periods is the start of a growing into inner wisdom, if you like.
