It was back in 1950 when a doctor described a "surprisingly sensitive spot inside the vagina near the urethra." He made this very distinct erogenous spot sound like it was relatively easy to find and stimulate. After all, if he could do it during research on his patients - surely any woman could do it as well. In the 1980s, Grafenberg's spot became known as the "G spot" and outside his own research - it has been anything BUT an easy spot to deal with.
For some women stimulation of the G spot means amazing and beyond description orgasms; for others it means a trip to the bathroom to urinate because of stimulation. Some researchers scoffed at the notion of such an area of the anatomy and called it mythological. Scientists still disagree about whether it is a separate gland, the deep down part of the clitoris or something else. Something tells me we need more women researchers looking into this geography and precisely identifying it so we CAN ALL ENJOY!!
Apparently in 2002 some researchers discovered enormous differences in women's anatomy - that only SOME women have Skene glands and only some have erectile tissue - and it's assumed that these 2 anatomical regions might be two variations of the G spot. So what about the rest of us???
Well, more research showed that some of us have what's called a "thickened vaginal front wall" and we experience vaginal orgasms rather than clitoral orgasms. I know, I know - gets complicated. That thickened vaginal tissue is in the same general area where in others they found the Skene gland or erectile tissue. And certainly it's known that the whole area is rich in nerves -but which nerves are being stimulated is still somewhat of a mystery.
The net result of all this investigation is that:
(1) Women are normal - whether or not they have one or more of these "orgasmic areas"
(2) There is a great amount of variability in orgasms
(3) Women's potential to have different kinds of sexual experiences is probably greater than men
(4) There may be more different paths to orgasm in women than in men
As a woman, I must confess that #3 and #4 make me really, really happy!!
