It's probably the most controversial gift of this holiday season. Planned Parenthood clinics in Illinois and Indiana are offering gift certificates in $25 - $100 amounts to give to loved ones for "the gift of life." They can be used for annual check ups, and for birth control. The problem as some see it, is that they can also be used towards an abortion, if the recipient so desires. Planned Parenthood spokespersons say that in these times of economic woes, health insurance is often the first "extra' to go. So many women are putting their health needs at the bottom of their to do list.
A number of religious and pro-life groups are outraged. They feel that at a time when we are celebrating the birth of Jesus, this gift can be used to end lives. Others just feel that a coupon that could be associated with abortion at holiday times is inherently offensive. Planned Parenthood's position is that these gift certificates will be especially meaningful in states where as many as 800,000 people are uninsured or simply cannot afford basic healthcare. The Indiana state Health Commissioner is calling the certificates a "really meaningful gift."
Some feel that the gift certificates should only cover health screenings while others feel health screening and birth control would be appropriate. for many the idea of a gift to cover an abortion is reprehensible. But a gift is a gift, isn't it?? The recipient should have the ultimate choice....or shouldn't they??
