Q: Birth control pill for PCOS women?

Hi,

I have polycycst ovarian syndrom (PCOS) and have a problem chosing birth control pill:

first I was on Ortho Tri cyclen - it made wonders for my skin, but eliminated completely my sex drive; then my doctor switched me toTricyclen, which kind of fixed my sex drive, but in 7 years I started spotting and experienced horrible headaches before my period. The my doctor switched me to Alesse, after which I gained 25 lbs in 1 year, got lots of facial hair and acne, and lost huge amount of hair on my head.

After 1 year on Alesse, I managed to lose 15 lbs being on a very strict diet and exercising a lot, my facial hair got under control now but I keep losing my hair the same, so now I have patches of bold skin on my head. Referral to endocrinologist is almost impossible to get in our BC health system. What to do?

Hi there

I am so sorry you are experiencing so many side effects from your birth control pills.  It must be terribly frustrating for you.

I am afraid that it may be a continued trial and error process to find the birth control which is right for you.

Let's start by giving you some overall information about birth control options from our Pregnancy Prevention Center.

Here is an excellent resource from The Women's Health Resource which talks about which pills are better for not having certain side effects.

Are you on the pill for protection only or...for other reasons related to your PCOS?  Would a barrier method work better for you I am wondering.

Thank you so much for reaching out here and I wish you the best of luck in your search.
