Q: locking fingers

a few years ago my thumbs would be locked in a bent fashion when i woke up in the mornings but would slowly unlock as the day went on ,then the condition went away . now my middle fingers of both hands are doing the same thing ,but now the pain is always there even after they free up. i can not bend them backwards even a little without very strong pain. any ideas why this is happening?
