Q: I have a copper IUD always had regular periods. Last period was a month late only lasted three days

Hi,

I am 24 and have always used the copper paraguard IUD. Recently I was 1 month late in my period. I got my period, no cramping or bloating which was unusual. I took two pregnancy test which came to be negative. This happened about three weeks ago. Tonight I started bleeding again. It wasn't normal blood though it was brown and a heavy flow, and I had mild cramping, Is this usual. I have never had this issue in the past. I feel confused. Could I be pregnant with having the copper IUD?

I was reading the patient FAQ's on the manufacturer's site and they discuss some of your issues, a little bit, and ask that you contact them, or your doctor, in regards to those.

Their number is: at 1-877-ParaGard (727-2427)

and their FAQ page is located here. If you click on "ParaGard and my body," it will oen up to information and to sub-questions about side effects and your period. They claim a 99% success at pregnancy prevention, so that leaves 1%.

I would consider seeing my doctor for a checkup to make sure everything is fine and perhaps find out out the reason for the change.
