Q: I think I have been having a lot of miscarriages. How can I know for sure?

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for about 6 months now. This month When I got my period it was early and the blood was all dark brown. There have been no traces of fresh red blood. It also seems like all of it is clotted. It is very thick and stringy. This seemed like a bad thing. I dont understand what is happening. Any possible answers? By the way I am 24 in case age matters.  Please help...

I don't think you can get a good answer this way, some women often bleed blood clots during menstruation, on other hand, it could be that you are having an early miscarriage. Other than your doctor, who can try to determine if you are and why you are, you can only get general information at sites like this.

There is a good explanation, definition, causes, symptoms and more at the Mayo Clinic which you can find here and here at the American Pregnancy Association. You may have already searched for this information but I wanted to make sure you see it. I hope it helps and I wish the best for you two.

Thank you for a response. I guess I am just really scared at this point. If I go to a doctor they might make it factual that I am unable to have a child. I just dont want to have to experience that with my husband. I was looking for hope I guess by comming on here. That and I felt weird about the clotted blood thing. Of all the women I have talked to I have never heard of dark think brown blood. I thought maybe if I came on here I would here how normal it was and have nothing to worry about.

I suppose the truth is I found out when I was 16 there was a high chance my abnormal positioning of my tubes would prevent me from having children as I got older. There were also a few cysts they had told me. I know I had many miscarriages when I was younger and was hoping it was just strong postulates of it being the wrong time. So now that I am full out trying to have a baby I am surprised I am not pregnant by now.

I will go to the doctor I guess there is no reason to get my hopes up that if we keep trying it will just magically happen.

Thanks

Ok, lets take a worst case scenario, which is that it is very difficult for you to get pregnant or carry a child.  At 24, you have about 20 years of conception time.  During that time, your body may change, and some of those changes are not medically understood.  Some of those changes allow a once infertile woman to bear children.  I have personally known women who were medically unable to conceive, but they did, years later.  Sometimes it was even after they adopted, thinking it was hopeless to have their own biological children.  So, while I feel your pain, I also urge you not to dispair.  After all, the effort of pregnancy is hopefully not unpleasant for you, and perhaps God has a reason for you to wait.  So, yes, there is always hope, short of having a hysterectomy.  Talk to your husband about your feelings.  Its very difficult not to think about it, but some have said after they "gave up" and did not think about it as much, they had children.  Stress can affect conception that way.  Good luck to you.
