Q: Will the Gardasil vaccination work if you have already been exposed to the virus?

My boyfriend has been diagnosed with HPV (genital warts). Iwent to the gyno. last week for some other tests and mentioned that he thought that was what he had but had not yet been diagnosed, and then the next day he was. So as of right now i do not know if i have been exposed to the HPV virus. My boyfriends family doctor gave him a prescription to give to me to go get the Gardasil vaccination. My question is if i am already infected will the Gardasil shot even matter?

Yes it does! I was diagnosed with HPV when I was pregnant with my daughter, they did some type of procedure right after I gave birth, and now I no longer have it. They also tell me that HPV, as long has it is not the serious strands, can go away on its own. I have gotten the shot, had no side effect and has done me great!

Gardasil protects against 4 strains of HPV that including 2 that cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts.

So even if you have been exposed to one virus, you should get the vaccine since it will protect you from the others.

Also, you didn't mention whether your boyfriend is getting vaccinated as well. The vaccine has been approved for males as well, so encourage him to go get it so he doesn't pick up (and therefore spread) any more strains of the virus.
