Q: What can cause a menstral cycle to last almost all year round?

I had my first period 2 months before I turned 14, and it lasted 2 weeks. I visited a gynecologist after I had a period that lasted 8 weeks straight and was a heavy flow with lots of blood clots. My physician put me on birth control pills, the entire time that I saw this docter she never gave me a pap smear. I was put on birth control pills from 14 years old until I truned 19, I took myself off of them, because they didn't work. I would have a period for 3 months straight and then off for 3 months, the pills gave me horrible cramps (which I never had before nor have I had cramps since taking myself off of the pill), and I was gaining a lot of weight while taking the pill, close to 40 lbs a year. After 19 years old my periods began to last longer and longer to the point I will be on my period all year round except for about 2 to 3 weeks worth of time in that year. Which usually will run in a series of 1 to 2 days and then I will bleed for months, and has reached up to 3 weeks off, and then back on again. I am 25 years old now. I also will have extreamly heavy days, where I am overflowing a heavy flow tampon and filling/overflowing an overnight stayfree pad in the matter of an hour, and then again in another hour, and this can last between 18 to 24 hours at a time. I will have days where my period will be a very light pink and barely any type of flow, to having a dark red flow, to having an orangish-red flow, to a brown color, to a bright red flow, accompanied by blood clots that will vary in size between the size of a dime to the size of a 50 cent piece. I am not sexually active, infact I haven't had sex i almost 5 years now, and I don't masturbate internally often (mainly because of my menstration). I looked up what may be an explination for my extreamly long menstral cycle and have found several different diagnosis, but none of them fully covered what is going on with me. I have never heard of anyone having a period that is as severe as mine. Please help me

I am not a doctor, but urge you to see a gynecologist for a pelvic exam and pap test, and whatever tests they deem necessary. There is a cause, it is not your fate to go through this in life. You just need to get to a good physical exam, where they will take your history and explore your symptoms.

There is an article on Menorrhagia , which is heavy menstrual bleeding, it begins by explaining normal menstruation and then symptoms of this condition and you fit some of those.

If you'll look on the left you will see links to all parts of the article, the symptoms, causes, risks, and more. When you make the appointment, before you go, follow their suggestions under, Preparing for Your Appointment, this will help the doctor in diagnosing you.

Some of the causes are serious and others not as much. You can't go by one doctor. If you are not satisfied, seek another opinion. Don't give up. I really hope you can find someone who will solve this finally.

Thank you so much, this website is amazing. I have searched around online before, and have never found something that was so detailed and easy to read. All of the big medical words can scare a person, this is pretty much straight to the point! I feel a lot better having a better explination, in a sense. There are some things in here that are making a bit more sense to me...like about headaches and fatigue..I can't thank you enough, this was a extreamly helpful!
