I asked my GP if I could have done a routine check by a gynecologist and she said it would be a waste of time. In Slovakia women have to have it done twice a year.

You can contact a gynecologist and request an examination whenever you want to, unless you are on an insurance plan which requires a referring physician.
Even then, you can choose to pay for seeing one on your own, if you wish.
