My wife is having a painful swelling on her outer labia and around her clitoris. There are also blisters that started off looking like pimples. We went to the GP and were quickly told this was herpes and are awaiting the test results. Neither of us have ever had a herpes outbreak, and we don't think we have contracted herpes. She is prone to yeast infections, What else could it be? Vulvitis? Thanks for any helpful information.

I don't think there is any other way to know except through testing. Health Central has a site devoted to Herpes, you can find that here.
At this site, there are pictures of genital herpes located on the right, under the question marks, not the first couple which are penises, but the next few show a woman.
I got that site from an article Merely Me, a writer and community leader for this site wrote about bumps and pimples on the vagina. You can find that article here. It may be worth a read since it discusses other infections.
