Q: my blood pressure has rosen this year. Oral contraception cause?

Hi,

I am 33 and i have been using the pill for the last 15 years and never had any kind of problem. A year ago when i did my regular visit at the doctors my blood pressure was 120/80 and now is 130-140/90-100.

Can be this the cause of the pill which after all this years started making me problems with hypertension?

What tests do u suggest me to make?

Tnx,

Simona

Hi Simona

Indeed...there just may be an association here.

The American Heart Association has this to say on this topic:  "Medical researchers have found that birth control pills increase blood pressure in some women. It's more likely to occur if you're overweight, have had high blood pressure during pregnancy, have a family history of HBP or have mild kidney disease. The combination of birth control pills and cigarette use may be especially dangerous for some women."

This is definitely something you will want to discuss with your doctor and/or gynecologist to see what options for birth control are safe for you.

You may get more information, resources, and support for your high blood pressure on Health Central's High Blood Pressure Connection.

Hope this helps some.  Let us know what happens after you speak with your doctor.
