I have been taking birth control pills for a couple of days and it's my first month on it. I've been spotting. Is it normal to experience this and how long will it last?

Breakthrough bleeding is a normal response in many women who first begin taking birth control. It is hard to say how long you will deal with it, you may spot for quite awhile, also you may not have your normal period when it is expected, which will make you worry about being pregnant, perhaps.

If you do start to worry, just take a home pregnancy test. The spotting will probably clear up with your next full period.

If the bleeding becomes heavy or bothersome, please contact your prescribing doctor for guidance. Do not be hesitant to seek reassurance, it is part of their care, and they need to know if you are having any serious side effects.
