Q: My Sex Life is Ruining my Life, Help!

Hello,

I am hoping that I can get answers and help.  I feel like my sex life is ruining my life.  I rarely want to engage in sexual activity because it causes me so many problems afterward.

I have not been able to find a birth control that works for me.

Tried the IUD and it caused so much discharge and foul odor that I had to have it removed after a year or so.

Tried birth control pills at differing estrogen levels and had severe mood swings and weight gain.

Tried spermicides which seem to give me yeast afterward.

I have visited my doctor on several occasions to come up with these different options but I always seem to have issues after sexual intercourse.

When my fiance ejaculates inside of me, it will cause an odor for maybe one day or two but if I use the spermicide, it turns to yeast.

If I reach an orgasm, I will also get a foul odor afterwards, for one or two days.

The answer has been that I have bacterial vaginosis and a course of antibiotics have been prescribed to re-balance my vaginal PH and restore good bacteria.  One sexual act it's right back to square one.  On one visit the nurse told me to use RePhresh after each sexual act to restore the natural PH and that seemed to help.  I also have included a pro-biotic (acidopholous) in my daily vitamin regimen.  My doctor suggested that would help to restore good bacteria.

Is this condition common and is there ANYTHING I can do about it.  I would like to understand the problem.

I am getting married in one month and would really like to get to the bottom of this so that I can really enjoy partnership with my husband.  PLEASE HELP!

Forgot to mention that I am otherwise healthy. Exercise regularly and vegetarian diet with fish. I also tried the NuvaRing, no luck.

Hi there

First of all I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this.  I can see where at this point you would feel incredibly frustrated and weary of this problem.

So it seems you have two issues:

1.  You can't find a birth control method which works well for you.

2.  Sexual intercourse seems to be causing you discomfort and chronic BV.

There are a lot of choices nowadays as far as birth control.  What about condoms?

You may want to visit our pregnancy prevention center to look over all the options available.  With birth control pills especially....there are numerous choices.  Write down the undesirable side effects you wish to avoid and take this list to your doctor to help select a pill (if this is the type of birth control you may wish to use) which is right for you.

Here too is information about bacterial vaginosis you may want to read.  I am wondering if your partner wears a condom...perhaps this can help as they say that one of the potential causes is alkaline semen.

Are you sure that BV is the only thing going on?  Could there be an underlying medical condition like an autoimmune disorder?  Have you had a full physical work-uo done recently? Is it possible that you may have an STD such as chlamydia?

Have you had a second course of antibiotics to treat your BV?  Sometimes it takes more than one course according to the literature.

Sometimes the problem can really be a chronic skin condition such as Lichen Planus or Lichen Sclerosis.

It might be helpful to keep a log...of when you experience irritation, discomfort, or a discharge and under which conditions.  Does this happen at certain times of the month such as near your period for example?  Take this log with you to the doctor.

I really hope you get to the bottom of this.  Let us know what your doctor says.  If you can't get any answers you may wish to seek a second opinion.

Thank you for your question.
