Q: Is it possible to have herpes for 10 yrs without knowing it?

I haven't had sex in over a decade (sorry to say), however, I just recently experienced my first blister outbreak on my vagina which was determined by a culture and blood test to be herpes.  I always thought symptons showed up within a few days of contracting the virus.  Is it possible to contract herpes in a non-sexual manner, or is this a case of it having laid dormant for years and was recently triggered by something? I'm still trying to figure out what that something was--I suspect it was the new whole grain cereal regime I was on.  I've been reading that arginine amino acids can trigger an outbreak, and one week prior to my initial outbreak I was eating whole grain cereal twice a day for a week as a means to lose weight. I had never ate whole grain cereals before.

I doubt your cereal or the arginine is the cause of this herpes outbreak.  Yes, you can have herpes for even more than 10 yrs and not suspect it unless you have some reason to test for it or you finally have your first outbreak (often caused by stress).  i would consider taking Acysclovir if it begins to recur on a more frequent basis and be honest with partners.  You need to read up on herpes so you understand all about your treatment options and so you are clear on how to prevent others from exposure.
