Q: Sex has been painful and I can't figure out why!!!

When I first got with my husband, we could do just about any position without any pain. Since I had my son 3 years ago, the only position my husband and I can comfortably have intercourse in is missionary. Of course that gets boring. If we try from the back or with me on top, or trying to lift my legs or any position other than missionary....when he penetrates its like a sharp feeling, at times it feels like the tip is hitting something up in there. I thought maybe it was a cyst on my ovaries, but I went to the doctor and he saw nothing, he put me on birth control and said give it 3 months, if it still hurts come back for an ultrasound. Then I came back to get an ultrasound, and still they found nothing!! This is so frustrating! Should I go back to the doctor? If so what should I ask him to look for, or test me for? Please help.

Hi MzSalley,

I do think you need to go back to a doctor!  I'm not a physician, so my suggestions about what to ask are soley based on what my clients have experienced.

I know that some people only have pain when they have deep penetration, but you mentioned that you have it when you try from the back which is fairly shallow penetration (if you are talking about, excuse the term, "doggie style"), so the following are associated with deep penetration.  Also, it sounds like they've ruled out cysts, but did they rule out the following:

Ligament tears (the ligaments that support the uterus can tear during childbirth)

Endometriosis

Fibroid tumors

I didn't include any other causes of painful intercourse (such as insufficient lubrication) given that you can have intercourse in the missionary position without pain.  Perhaps some of the other Experts as well as readers can chime in with other suggestions about what to ask your doctor.
