Q: I recently had a Dysport injection. I know it is not advisable to have this if you are pregnant, but is it recommended to wait to become pregnant after having a Dysport injection?
I recently had a Dysport (competitor to Botox) injection to address an issue with a surgery from a few years ago. I know it is not advisable to have this if you are pregnant, but I am now reading about it online and it sounds as though it might be recommended to wait to become pregnant after having a Dysport injection.
My question is how long should I wait to try to conceive? There has to be instances of women getting Dysport and then becoming pregnant (many women in their 30s and 40s and most of the celebrities get Dysport for cosmetic reasons). Has it affected their pregnancies or the health of their children?
Please advise as if you were making the choice for yourself (or for your wife). Also, what have you seen with your patients in this scenario?
If you are looking for a doctor's opinion you should contact your doctor or possibly your pharmacist.
I haven't read anything which says you need to wait after an injection but I would wait; what I read is that the substance can remain present for about three months but that there is no evidence it can be harmful if the pregnancy begins afterward.
Still, I would wait and check with my doctor for advice before I began trying.
I'm sure you've read a lot but this is from Drug.com about Dysport:
"FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Dysport will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Dysport. It is not known whether botulinum toxin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not receive Dysport without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."
Maybe another member will reply with better information. Good luck.
