Q: Extremely heavy periods with clots and irregular flow?

I'm 38 years old with 3 kids (all c-sections).  I always had a normal, on-time cycles (every 25 days) until the birth of my last child when I had a tubal ligation.  Since then my period continues to be on time but is EXTREMELY heavy (soak an ultra tampon every hour) with very large clots.  Flow is very irregular -- flooding one day, barely anything for next 12 hours, back to flooding, etc.  No pain.  Extended period (up to 15 days).  Needless to say, I'm anemic.  I have some cramping around the time I would ovulate but that's it.  Only other pain is that I have extreme pain around the vaginal opening when removing tampons (even when soaked).  (Feels like I'm trying to remove glass from my vagina).

Blood tests came back within the normal range, although I am on the low end of progesterone (always had to take supplements during pregnancy).  Ultrasound showed one ovarian cyst.  Gyn wants to do an ablation, but this feels hormonal to me (the irregular flow, emotional, facial hair growth, loss of hair from head).

Any ideas what this could be????

Hi there

Please know that I am not a doctor but...I have heard this story many times from women who write in about their tubal ligations and the aftermath.  Some women seem to not have many problems but many other women do.  There is even a name for it now...Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome.  Check out the link I just gave you for symptoms and support.

I honestly don't know what the answer is...some women have reversed this procedure.  But I think it would be a good idea to do as much research as possible so that you can be an informed patient.

It may also be...something else entirely is causing your symptoms.  This is definitely something you will need your doctor's guidance about.

Sometimes they do a procedure in the womb where they burn the lining to stop the bleeding.  More radial yet is a hysterectomy.  I don't know if its linked to the tubal, but I can tell you my wife had a tubal and very heavy bleeding and clotting, and the burn procedure did work for a few years, then the bleeding came back and they did a hysterectomy.
