Contraceptive Ring
Cornell University researchers say a newly developed contraceptive vaginal ring may help inhibit the transmission of the HIV virus that causes AIDS. The rings, which are made of either Acacia gum or hydrogel, release not only contraceptives but several retroviral drugs that block HIV. In a new study, the researchers found that the rings released the drugs at concentrations high enough to block HIV for at least 15 days in Acacia gum rings and for at least 28 days in hydrogel rings.
