“A lot of women have a hard time looking at where their bodies come from. They might genetically have a bigger body, and even if they weighed two pounds they’d still look big because it’s their body structure,” adds Shapiro. “That’s the hard part when you talk about body image. They want to not have the body that they have, that they were given.”
When Jaynes-Bell deals with young girls who desire unrealistic bodies and look to the stars for role models, she tries to direct their focus to the more positive, healthier bodies in Hollywood, such as the more physically liberated JLo or Drew Barrymore.
“I try to get them to look at other women, who are actresses who are heavier. They are fuller-figured women. You notice that their arms are fuller, and it doesn’t seem to bother Drew Barrymore too much.”
