What to expect when having a biopsy?

I have a birthmark on the back of my thigh that has recently raised. The dermatologist would like to do a biopsy. She described it as a scraping that will not require stiches. Can someone explain the process and will it hurt? Also, I actually saw a physician's assistant and not the actual MD. Is this common? Thanks
