  1. I tried BareMinerals, and It Made My Face Itch

After reading Sue's SharePost, I went to Sephora to try out BareMinerals. I was pretty sick of the oil slick that traditional sunscreens leave on my face, especially since I have oily skin to begin with.

At first, I really liked the BareMinerals product when I was trying it on at Sephora, but as I was walking home (probably 10 minutes after application), my face started to feel itchy... and the itch didn't go away.

By the time I got home about an hour later, my face looked shimmery/greasy -- the product didn't do a great job of leaving a matte finish. Granted, I live in the humid south, so maybe no product can stand up to the humidity and my pores.

FYI -- these mineral foundations do nothing to shrink the appearance of pores, unlike other foundations.

I read an article in yesterday's New York Post about the trend in mineral makeup use and an irritant called bismuth oxychloride. I am wondering if that is what caused my face to itch.

In any case, I am heading back to Sephora to return the BareMinerals kit I bought... I am sure it works for some people, just not for me.

    Hi Sarah,

I suspect that some of your problem could have to do with the communal brush that places like Sephora provide. While some stores do take measures to clean brushes, it's impossible to sterilize them completely. With disposable mascara wands, eyeshadow applicators and q-tips, it's easier to avoid irritation. With something like a blush brush, however, you may still have problems.

In addition, I spoke to a representative from Bare Minerals and she explained that some people experience discomfort due to the movement of the product on the skin, usually as a result of heat or activity. She suggests using a thicker moisturizer and allowing it to dry completely before applying the makeup.

In terms of the shimmery appearance, the makeup itself has luminescent particles that help to create a dewy finish. On a personal level, I prefer this, but have heard from other users that the Mineral Veil product leaves more of a matte finish.

There are some concerns that bismuth oxychloride may cause irritation in some people, but this is about the same risk as using talc, another popular powder ingredient.

I hope this helps clear up some of your questions.
