On 7/19/10 I got the results from a biopsy on my nose and found out I have BCC. I am 70 yrs. old and grew up during the time that sunbathing was the thing to do. I had many severe sunburns during my life up to the time that there was information out there about skin cancer.
I started treatment with imiquimod (aldara) 5 days ago. I have 5 days of treatment and 2 days off for 6 wks. Today I have experienced some unpleasant symptoms of headache, diarrhea and a little nausea. The site has not changed much - some redness. I have chosen this treatment rather than mohs because
I do not want the disfigurement that often accompanies mohs. My Dr.
encouraged me to try it. I understand there is a good rate of eradication of the
cancer. I am not sure exactly what to expect because every person has a
different experience. If anyone can tell me the progression symptoms during the treatment I would be very appreciative. People generally seem to think skin cancer isn't a big deal but I find myself struggling with the whole concept.

Hello and welcome to the site!
I am always grateful when a member posts about their experience as this is such useful information for others who are going through the same thing.
Here is our information about Aldara and they do talk about some of the side effects you are experiencing: "Flu-like symptoms (such as fever, tiredness, muscle aches), runny/stuffy nose, cough, diarrhea, nausea, and back pain may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly."
So I would call your doctor about these side effects.
Here is also an article about topical treatments by our Dr. Kevin Berman and you may want to read the comments as well.
Here is also information from the Aldara website.
Also here is a derma site which talks about what you may expect during the course of treatment.
I would contact your doctor with your questions. They are going to be able to tell you what is normal and what is not in the treatment process.
Thank you for writing this post and please do come back to let us know how you are doing.
