Best Skin Care Advice for Your Age
When you were younger, you might have been able to get away with sleepless nights, sessions in the tanning bed and snacking on junk food. As you age, though, you can start to notice changes in your skin, such as discoloration, breakouts and fine lines. By making the right lifestyle choices and by choosing the right skin care products, you can keep your skin looking fresh and young.
Here are the most common skin issues and solutions for the different decades of your life
Acne: If you’re having breakouts that you haven’t experienced before, it likely is due to hormone changes that occur in your 20s. Acne can also be caused by eating oily, fried foods and drinking unhealthy beverages.
Fine lines: It is common for fine lines to start appearing on a woman in the second half of her 20s. Causes may include stress, late-night parties and an unhealthy diet.
Daily sunscreen: Keep your skin protected by applying a light daytime moisturizer that contains sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. Besides helping to prevent premature wrinkles, applying sunscreen daily also helps lower your risk of skin cancer.
Examine your lifestyle: Drinking alcohol, smoking and not getting enough sleep can cause free radical damage and contribute to wrinkles and discoloration. Cut out bad habits, drink plenty of water and add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet.
Discoloration: Skin discoloration can be caused by too much sun exposure, hormone changes and genetics. Not drinking enough water and eating an unhealthy diet can also prevent the skin from creating healthy new skin cells to replace discolored cells.
Melasma: This is a common skin disorder among women, marked by brown or gray patches on the face. Sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma can be caused by pregnancy, as well as sun exposure, estrogen supplements and birth control pills.
Add retinol: It may be worth investing in an anti-aging treatment that contains retinol, which is a derivative of vitamin A that works to help unclog pores, boost collagen production and reduce fine lines. It is a good idea to start by applying retinol only once every few nights for a few weeks, as many women experience irritation until their skin becomes used to the new substance.
Exfoliate: Regular exfoliation removes the skin’s surface layer of dead cells and can make skin smoother and silkier. It also allows products to more easily penetrate your skin. Exfoliating two to three times a week with exfoliating gloves, a scrub solution or a gentle washcloth is sufficient to reap the benefits.
Dry skin: Once women enter their 40s, it is common for their skin to stop producing as many natural oils as it did in younger years. The result is dryness and shrinking of the skin. So it’s important for women to incorporate into their skin care regimen ways to compensate for the loss of oil. The hormone changes that come with menopause may also contribute to skin dryness.
Wrinkles: While some women don’t develop many wrinkles in their 20s or 30s, most women are likely to see them forming by the time they reach their 40s. Years of sun exposure, lifestyle habits and genetic factors contribute to aging skin. It is important to begin treating your skin at the first signs of aging in order to slow down the process.
Boost collagen: Use a moisturizer that contains extra hydration and peptides to boost collagen production. Moisturizers that also include glycerin or hyaluronic acid can help the skin retain moisture, but be sure to consult your dermatologist to make sure the ingredients are safe for your skin.
Change your diet: What you include in your diet can also help compensate for the loss of natural oils that occurs in your 40s. Make sure your diet includes essential fatty acids, such as omega-3s. Good sources include salmon, walnuts, eggs and flaxseed.
Your 50s and beyond
Loss of tone: Melanin production decreases during menopause, which leads to a dull and uneven skin tone. Some studies have shown that skin tone and luminosity indicate a person's age as much as wrinkles do.
Sagging: Women in their 50s typically lose muscle mass and muscle tone, which can lead to sagging skin around the neck and mouth. The skin also loses elastin levels, which leads to more visible lines around the mouth and the eyes.
Moisturize: Women in their 50s typically benefit from using thick moisturizers and oils, which will help lock in moisture. Hydrating moisturizers should be applied both in the morning and at night underneath makeup. The skin will most easily absorb the moisturizer within three minutes of washing your face or getting out of the shower.
More powerful products: In order to compensate for wrinkles, sagging and discoloration, women in their 50s typically benefit from skin care products that contain ingredients more powerful than those they used in their younger years. Common products include peptides, retinoids, alpha hydroxyl and amino acids. Be sure to consult your dermatologist before trying products that you have not used before.
