recovering from basal cell cancer

By Mary Sunday, January 25, 2009

On Jan. 7 2009 I had a Moh's procedure for basal cell cancer on the L side of my nose and the following day I had a flap repair by a cosmetic surgeon. This whole experience has been very humbling for me. First off I went to see the dermatologist Oct 2008 because I had a scally area on my leg I wanted him to look at (I had to cancel a previous appointment in Aug because my son was hospitalized and the appt I made in Sept I had to cancel because my work scheduled me to work). He used nitrogen to burn the area and said not to worry. I then pointed an area on my nose that I had noticed in the past few months (before the approval for my dermatoligical appt came through) that was a little red and veiny looking. It wasnt raised, not very red, not a sore. He took a biopsy and I received a call a week later that the biopsy was positive for bcc. I know that this is slow growing cancer and my work would not allow me to take time off in Dec. I am an RN. I am very surprised that what was so tiny and just noticible to me involved such intense action that I was not prepared for. Now I am recovering from the flap repair to the side of my nose. The scar looks hugh, but the doctor said it would be a full year before it is fully healed. My concerns is that the dermatiologist said he would "probably see me again" meaning I assume once one has basal cell cancer there is a higher reoccurence rate. So here I am waiting to heal...

I am a 63 year old female that has been battling skin cancer from the age of thirty. I have had surgery so many time that I have lost count.  I just keep on using my pre-sun, wearing a hat, and trying to be a moving target for the sun.  At first I was horrified but I just take it as it comes and I know I have done all I can do to prevent future cancer.  Go to your Derm Doc and also find a good plastic surgeon that you trust. I have had a nose flap and skin graphs and the outcome has been very good. Within a year all areas look so much better.

Thank you for sharing. You sound very brave, but what else can one do? Good luck.

Miss Mary,  At first, at 30 years old, I was horrified.  After time passed I just rolled with the punches.  Wear you pre-sun, wear a hat, and wear a smile!  Also, have cech-ups often. Don not be embarrassed to have a "whole" body check.  My father had a bad time with skin cancer and did die of lung cancer at age 76.  He fought skin cancer for 30 years.  Kathy

Has anyone on this forum ever used CYMILIUM or CURADERM for treatment of skin cancer?

Do you think these products would work?

I was diagnosed with BCC  on the L side of my nose Oct 2007. I had the Moh"s surgery as well. Was in the Dr's office all day. Left with 1/2 a nose. Most of the L side was gone. I went to a plastic surgeon, who I'm not so sure had that much experience with the forehead flaps and revisions.  I was devastated by the process. I continued to work in between my surgeries. People would stare @ me when I went out in public. It was humiliating.  I had 6 surgeries in 1 yr.  It left me emtionally, psychologically and phyically drained. I still don't look "normal".  I was left with a large scar on my forehead ( even after a dermabrasion treatment) and have to wear bangs to conceal it. You can see the graft scar all along the L side of my nose. It is even noticable with make-up. I still need 1 more surgery, but I've had enough for now. There is a plastic surgeon here in town specialing in this & produces fabulous results, but he does not take insurance and the surgery will cost about $15,000!  I wish someone had prepared me for this process. After 1 1/2 yrs I'm finally coming to terms with my appearance & my grief. The lesson I learned was to thoroughly research your plastic surgeon, ask a lot of questions and talk with a lot of people who have gone thru this so you are somewhat prepared.  Good luck to everyone dealing with this now and in the future.
