By Kevin Berman, MD, PhD, Health Guide Tuesday, September 26, 2006
Hi everyone. Today I want to talk about what to expect when visiting a dermatologist for a full body skin exam and how to get the most out of the visit. Because the dermatologist sees you only during the office visits, it is important that a person performs a self skin exams monthly. By doing so...

Thank you for this information. It is very difficult to get full information about what this exam entails. Knowing that absolutely everything should be checked helps in preparing for this exam for the first time.

Doctor, does this include having a male dermatologist actually spreading a woman's labia to check for skin cancer? the visit was for a basal cell on the back. I'm a little concerned as I have never had an exam like this before and the female dermatologist I am now going to has never done anything like this. Thank you for your help, a concerned middle age woman

I just went to a dermatolgist's office and was examined by a physicians assistant.  I was in a full length gown with my undewear in tack. I sat in a louge chair during the exam.   She checked my head, face, shoulders, arms (not underarms).  She checked around my stomach, the front part of my legs (just below my knees ). The last thing she checked was my toes and feet.
This exam was easier than I was led to believe. I was not the least bit embarrassed.  I was told I was fine and should get another exam in a year.

I just went to a dermatolgist's office for a skin cancer exam.  The physicians assistant checked my head, face, shoulders, arms (not underarms).  My legs up to just above my knees.   She also checked my toes and feet.  No skin cancer found.

This was a very different exam than described by doctors online.

it is important you keep a record of your dermotalogy visit for your further medical referance. for this you can avail the service of a good medical transcription services provider.
