Malignant Melanoma Skin Cancer

By strokeman Tuesday, January 22, 2008

I was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma in 1989.  I was admitted into the Melanoma clinic at the University of Pennsylvania for 10 years.  I still get checked on a regular basis.  I hear so many stories on this quick attacking cancer.  I feel that if people were more educated on this skin cancer people would be aware of their exposure to the sun.  This type of cancer has a lot of heredity.  I am blessed with six kids and I am so glad that I have this education at my expense so my kids have knowledge of this disease.  My exposure to the sun came early when I was a lifeguard for twenty years on the beaches of South Jersey.  Thank God that I was lucky enough catch this early.  To each any everyone who reads this please be careful in the sun and check always for signs of Skin Cancer.

Thanks so much for your post strokeman.  It is true that the more education about melanoma the more likely people will protect themselves in the sun.

Thanks and all the best, sue

Hey Sue thanks for your response. I get very concerned when i constantly hear of people that fall to this type of cancer. I am told that there is a very low percentage of reacurance of this cancer, but still worry all the time. Thanks for the prevention section I will pass that along.

Thanks

Strokeman

i just read your entry.  i am newly diagnosed with melanoma.  i am meeting today to have the site removed and the sentinel node thing done.  i am 36 with a 3 year old and 1 year old.  i am terrified of my children growing up without a mommy.  your entry gave me a little hope.  melanoma sounds so sneaky and invasive there is no telling what to expect.  i just want to raise my kids and be there for them.

I too was recently diagnosed with melanoma. I had the melanoma removed as well as the sentinel node (which was cancerous) so they took the remaining lymph nodes from my groin. Those lymph nodes ,thankfully, turned out to be non-cancerous. I then went on interferon treatment and just completed that. It wasn't fun but it was worth it. Now I will be tested every three months by cat-scan as well as checked by a dermatologist.

I hope all is well with you and wish you the best. I also am a mother and the scariest part of this ordeal was feeling so helpless about my children being without me. Hopefully that won't happen for many years.
