Acne vs. Skin Cancer

My son has acne, and his dermatologist says the best way to treat it beyond medication is lots of sunlight. I fear we may be trading one health problem for another....?

What steps shoud I be taking?

I have very fair skin, but I also tend to have skin reactions to most lotions and creams. Knowing that I should be wearing some sort of sunblock every day, what are my options as far as the least likely to give me more skin trouble? Are there lotions and creams that that shouldn't be used by some types of people?

How often should I have my skin checked?

I have extremely fair skin - and therefore a high risk of developing melanoma. how often should i have my skin examined? I've heard once a year, but I've also heard you should get a skin exam at the end of each summer. Does anyone have advice?

Am I at risk of skin cancer if I go tanning once every two weeks?

Everyone I know chastises me for visiting a tanning salon from time to time. I know extensive sun exposure is dangerous, but the truth is, I'm a little skeptical about the alleged danger of exposing myself to UV rays only once every two weeks for no more than 12 minutes.
