Q: Using Carac and Aldara for SCC on the face.

I am being treated for SCC on the cheek with a combination of Carac and Aldara ... had a severe reaction and am now on a break but will be going back to Aldara soon. Any info on using both creams? Although I've found a lot of info on the use of these creams for BCC, there seems to be little on SCC ... not sure if I'm getting the best treatment. Currently the area (a little smaller than the size of a quater) looks like a crater as it has large protruding scabs around the edge and an oozing nonscab in the center. I don't know if the Aldara will penitrate the raised scab area and wonder if it will leave a deep scar in the unprotected center area. Any info will be appreaciated. Thanks. P.S. I'm 52 and had a hard time getting this diagnosed as it just looked like eczyma.

Hello Dee

First of all I am glad you did get a diagnosis as squamous cell carcinoma can be invasive.  It is good to get it treated early.

Here is some information I want to give to you:

A Dermatologist Answers Questions about Topical Chemotherapy Creams

Here is the official Carac site.

Here is information we have on Aldara.

And here is another post written by a dermatologist about Aldara and Carac creams.

Only your doctor would be able to tell you why he has you using both creams at once.  Maybe you would like to get a second opinion?

This is a quote from the Skin Cancer Foundation about treating SCC:

"The vast majority of squamous cell carcinomas are curable when identified and removed in a timely manner. Mohs micrographic surgery has the highest overall cure rate (94-99 percent) of any treatment for squamous cell carcinoma. Mohs also saves the greatest amount of healthy tissue, and appears to reduce the rate of local recurrence."

Was Mohs surgery a procedure discussed with you?  Only your doctor can tell you why he or she prescribed the treatment...I would suggest you have a conversation with your doctor about your options.  If you are not satisfied you can then get a second opinion.

I wish you the best of luck.  Thank you for your question.
