Oh Ann...I am so sorry this happened to you.  This is why I recommend that everyone go see a dermatologist each year for a full body skin check up.  Sometimes the GP's miss skin cancer even though in your case...it seems like it would have been so evident.

Have they told you what type of skin cancer this is?

Squamous cell skin cancer is more aggressive than Basal cell carcinoma and can spread to other organs.  It still is relatively slow growing though.

Basal cell carcinoma is rarely deadly and is usually slow growing.  Our Dr. Kevin Berman has written a good article on this called, "Basal Cell Carcinoma is not and never will be melanoma."  In this article the doctor says:  "If these cancerous cells invade deeper down into the dermis then it is called invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Invasive squamous cell carcinoma is more likely to metastasize than basal cell carcinoma, but this fortunately does not happen often."

I do hope they take care of you soon and to tell you if the cancer is superficial and limited to your skin. I would not panic as you do not have all the information yet.

Please do let us know what happens.  We will be thinking of you.
